My Word for 2019: HAPPY

Last year I decided not to make New Year’s resolutions anymore. But, instead choose a word that I would carry with me throughout the year to remind me what I want to focus on in my personal and professional life. It’s almost like a mantra that keeps me grounded that I can go back to each day or each hour or even minute and start fresh at that moment and re-focus on what I know is important to me. In 2018, I choose the word BRAVE which served me well as I stepped up and stepped outside my comfort zone in many ways. I will continue to be brave into this new year because I know that the greatest growth comes from being outside our comfort zone.
My word for 2019 is HAPPY.
I chose this word because I believe that being HAPPY is a choice and that we have the ability to choose happiness over despair. Yes, sometimes happiness is a feeling, but sometimes it is just a decision. Making that decision does take practice, commitment, and the right mindset to be able to choose being happy. There are things that I do that robs me of being happy. A big one for me is comparing myself to others and having negative thoughts (thinking the worst possible thing will happen). But, also not being present or being grateful for the moment or the experience. So instead, moving forward, I will focus on the following actions.
Focus on positive thoughts and a good attitude. Smile more.
Wake up in the morning feeling appreciative for what I DO have. I will remind myself how far I have come versus how far I still need to go.
Practice daily affirmations (I am statements).
Stop comparing myself to others. To be happy with me!
Finding gratitude, growth or joy in every moment.
Spend time with people I admire, who are happy, nice, positive, smart, inspirational & fun.
Choose to be the best I can be.
Help others. To make a positive impact in other peoples lives. I have learned that helping others and giving back, always makes me feel good! The more people I can help, the better.
Have you chosen your word for 2019? If so, I would love for you to share!
